Welcome to Storytime for the week of April 29
Welcome to ‘Storytime’ for Wednesday April 29. The iconic Dr. Seuss is known as an author of children’s books, and he certainly has a funny, engaging writing style that captures the attention of young readers. Last week we read The Lorax in honour of Earth Day. It’s amazing that, in 1971, just a year after the first Earth Day celebration, Dr. Seuss was so aware of the human impact on the environment and the changes that would need to be made to ensure a sustainable future. This week we read another classic by Dr. Seuss …. Oh the Places You’ll Go. I love the line “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” We may not always be in control of the circumstances we find ourselves in but we can certainly choose how we respond in those circumstances, and that is an encouraging thought.
I think we can all acknowledge that our mothers had a big part to play in who we are and how we are equipped to handle life’s trials and celebrate life’s joys. After all, who was it that put those shoes on your feet? And who is there cheering you on every step of the way?
Weekly Challenge: This week your challenge is to create a card for Mother’s Day. You can make your card for your mom, grandmother, or any female mentor that has been an important influence in your life. The prize is special and there is only one, an original oil painting entitled Violets by local artist Lucy Poscente. Lucy lives just a few minutes walk from the Heintzman House in Thornhill and she paints the beauty of the natural native landscapes in the neighbourhood and ravine surrounding her house. One lucky winner will be drawn on Wednesday and the painting (pictured below) will be delivered prior to Mother’s Day so it can accompany the winner’s card. Even though there can be only one winner of the painting, the best thing is that everyone will take the time to make a card and this truly is the best gift. I am hoping to receive 4 cards that I can keep in my keepsake journal (hint hint Rawlins kids … you need to get busy!).
There is a possibility to earn 2 entries to the draw. You can receive your 1st entry by filling out the form and indicating that your card is complete. You can receive a 2nd entry by emailing a picture of your card to michelle.rawlins@uppercanadachorus.com or by posting on instagram and tagging @uppercanadachorus with the hashtag #weekly challenge.
Have fun creating your cards!!!
